Then, in the second section, I canvass a new — part-conceptual and part-genealogical — account of the key theoretical fault-lines between liberals, and show that those faultlines are unbridgeable.

However, is it generally possible to grant this distinction between antagonism and agonism without accepting normative standards in public discourse that saliently resemble those advocated by (some) deliberative democrats? Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory, Forthcoming, 32 Pages In this paper we provide an analysis of one important aspect of political communication, the use of slippery slope arguments, and show that the fact of pluralism weakens the agonists’ case for contestation as a sufficient ingredient for appropriately democratic public discourse. In the first section I argue that we can make sense of the existence of a liberal tradition in politics despite the deep disagreements on the nature and justification of liberalism in philosophy. In a nutshell, realism differs from non- ideal theory because it need not be concerned with feasibility constraints, and it differs from utopianism because it eschews detailed blueprints of the perfect polity.

This paper rejects that approach by advancing two related claims: (i) the unity of liberalism amounts just to a roughly and readily identifiable political tradition, whereas (ii) its philosophical foundations are conceptually irreconciliable, despite some genealogical common ground. And even if there is some scope for political normativity, does realism’s reliance on interpretations of political practices condemn it to some form of status quo bias? Agonist theorists have argued against deliberative democrats that democratic institutions should not seek to establish a rational consensus, but rather allow political disagreements to be expressed in an adversarial form. So the aim of the paper is not to advance any normative position regarding liberalism, but just to map liberal theory and liberal politics onto each other. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/institute-of-advanced-studies/people/dr-enzo-rossi

We illustrate that contention by identifying two specific kinds of what we call pluralism slippery slopes, i.e. Agonist theorists have argued against deliberative democrats that democratic institutions should not seek to establish a rational consensus, but rather allow political disagreements to be expressed in an adversarial form. My analysis points towards the conclusion that liberalism as a unified political tradition is an ideological construct; but I also aim to show how that shouldn't lead us to underestimate the importance of articulating its philosophical foundations, insofar as normative political theory can inform real political decisions, up to and including our overall allegiance to a political tradition. To see how that may be the case one needs to characterise realism by contrasting it with both non-ideal theory and utopianism.

My main aim is to assuage some worries about realism’s alleged conservative tendencies.

Most attempts to make sense of liberalism as a unified tradition have focused on its theoretical foundations or normative commitments. If political judgment is not to be derived — exclusively or at all — from pre-political moral commitments, what scope is there for genuinely normative political thinking? 9 Pages
